1) Chakra-Targeted ExercisesAccording to the C.H.E.K. institute, our bodies can be categorized into six different zones. Each zone corresponds with one of the major chakras - your body’s main energy centers. We can take advantage of these cool human features to help ourselves get over an ex.
Zone 4 - Upper Back and ChestZone 4 controls your blood pressure, immune system, and electromagnetic field generator. This zone gets pummeled by love and relationship induced stress. The saying, “I just need to get this off my chest” is #literally literal.
Zone 2 - lower abs, lumbar regions, legs, and feetZone 2 also takes a hit from relationship stress. Stress in this ever-important zone can affect water regulation, elimination, and healthy sex thangs. By strengthening the muscles corresponding to Zone 2 and Zone 4, you improve your body’s ability to cope with the emotional stress that becomes physically manifested in your back, chest, back of the thighs, etc. Paul Chek, the wellness guru, explains his recommended exercises for Zone 2 and Zone 4 here. In addition, you can skim through Yoga Journal’s article, “A Beginner’s Guide to the Chakras.” Prepare to be shock(ra)ed!
Olympic lifts. Seriously. Just do it. Actually, wait! Please read these amazing benefits and safety precautions first. Functional movements, like pull-ups, squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses, elicit powerful neurological and hormonal responses. According to the Crossfit Journal, the hormonal response to working these giant muscle groups includes increased hGH (growth factor), testosterone, and acute adrenocortical response. Most noteworthy is that all three of these responses to getting #SWOL dramatically improve your ability to handle all forms of stress! Furthermore, these lifts require a TON of energy. Out of necessity, your body will have to divert some of the energy that your racing, ever-spinning mind is consuming. Our friend Paul Chek states that a cognitively engaged brain will suck up 80% of the available energy in your bloodstream. EIGHTY PERCENT! Redirecting energy to your muscles will cut off of the fuel that feeds incessant breakup thoughts. Ah yes, this peace between your ears will feel amazing. Maybe even better than that one day you forgot to do all your homework and woke up to find out that school was cancelled. Watch these demos & videos showing how to properly be a boss in the gym. I mean, a broken heart is enough of an injury. No need to fracture your bicep or something while getting over an ex.

3) Treat Yo’ AmygdalaYour amygdala is the emotional center of your brain, and is thus responsible for your experience of emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness. As such, it's important to pay attention to this little guy in times of distress. But how? Luckily, you have some control over your amygdala's health! Your amygdala is directly connected to your “abdominal brain,” or your gut. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “The gut-brain axis (GBA) consists of bidirectional communication between the central and the enteric nervous system, linking emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions.” Thus, a healthy gut equals a healthy, stable emotional center! Our friend and nutritionist Frances Largeman-Roth wrote this article with your gut's health in mind. She provides recipes that will support the microbiota that your abdominal-brain craves for emotional balance.
4) Ground Yourself
No, no, no, not like that. You can still stay out past 9:30pm. But, only if you promise to ground yourself by connecting with nature. Warren Williams, a coach who is all about balance, suggests adjusting your frequency to restore your spirit. This does not require a four month solo backpacking trip to the remote hills of India with minimal provisions. All you need to do is walk outside in some lush green grass barefoot. Or walk around on real wood floors. The Earth has a negative ion charge, so contact with the Earth creates a positive polarity with your body. This simple life hack has a recharging effect.
If you live in a frozen tundra or in a world of carpet, a grounding mat will do! Check out what Wellness Mama has to say on this.
