Our Story

THE BEGINNING...

yumbutter began as many stories do — with a love obsession. no cheesy romance here, though. just gooey gobs of homemade peanut butter and a desire to build the world’s most responsible company. as an athlete and adventurer, adrian, yumbutter’s founder, spent most of his life shoveling peanut butter into his mouth to sustain his running, jumping, climbing, and flying. in 2007, he fell head over heels for his first batch of homemade PB. his culinary curiosity (not to be confused with adeptness) led him to empty the contents of his kitchen’s cabinets into freshly ground batches. the result: amazingly unique concoctions that propelled his love for the childhood classic to new heights. the idea brewed for three years along with his passions for nutrition, responsible business, and helping others. while trekking towards Mt. Everest Base Camp in the Nepal Himalaya in 2009, adrian doused his lunchtime staple of PB and crackers with a mix of Asian spices. the revolutionary, mouth-watering combo fueled him to Base Camp and back and haunted his psyche, leaving him wondering if others would love it, too. when he returned from a year in Asia, he set up shop in Madison, WI with yumbutter now more than a dream.

throughout 2010, adrian hauled his freshly ground potions to Madison’s farmers’ markets - over 100 of them - week in and week out, often on a trailer lurching behind his bike. the year ended with expectations far surpassed — a cool crew of loyal customers and over 3,000 pounds of hand-made yumbutter sold. what a yummy start!

THE MIDDLE...

in 2011, adrian expanded yumbutter's churning capabilities and set their personal bar a little higher. the year included building a dedicated churning facility with a super-duper churning machine to craft our homestyle peanut butter, only a little faster and a lil' less messier. now, with some more good people on board, yumbutter made its way onto the first retail shelves in Madison and slowly into a handful of select grocery and specialty stores in Milwaukee, Chicago, Woodstock, IL, and Eau Claire, WI. adrian and the team were finally able to launch to long awaited manifestation of the desire to improve the world— BuyOne|FeedOneTM . B1F1 is our approach to solving worldwide malnutrition in children. we help feed a kid in need every time you buy a jar.[insert b1f1 link]

THE JUST GETTING STARTED...

2012 is here and what an exciting one it has been. with the BuyOne|FeedOne in full swing and momentum slowly building, we are deliberately adding retail partners who believe in our mission. we also took a big step and formed one-half  of a new food company, ?m Boys Food Movement. while collaborating with another responsible food company in Madison, we decided two is better than one in our quest to solve malnutrition, enlighten the food system, and show how a business can have the power and motivation to improve the world.

our food movement also crafts Food Your Body Likes brand of Cereal Revolution.

our mission

  1. craft the world’s yummiest, healthiest nut butters.

we do that with simple, wholesome, and yummy

ingredients.

  1. vanquish food injustice.

through BuyOneFeedOneTM, we help feed malnourished children. further, we talk with and educate the public at large, with a focus on how children in the U.S. can make healthier food choices for better health outcomes.

  1. support responsible farmers

we aim to work with growers who treat their land and their crops responsibly, with sincere consideration for the health of the earth and the impact of their crops on people's bodies. that means sustainable and ethical as a priority, organic when possible, and local when it exists.

  1. replenish the earth

as we grow, we'll do everything in our power to leave the planet better than we found it.

we're a new breed of responsible company. our mission makes us feel pretty darn good about running a business.

our philosophy

we do things unconventionally. why? because our priorities are different than other companies. we've realized that if we put people first - our customers, employees, suppliers, and strangers we've never met - we can create a successful company that provides meaningful work and respectable pay. we treat customers like friends, not dollar signs. we will always make the yummiest, healthiest yumbutter for them. no shortcuts and no crappy ingredients. we treat employees like family, not "payroll". we aspire to hire, train, empower, and reward our employees above the status quo and provide the environment for their maximum happiness potential. we treat suppliers like hardworking humans, not enemies. we aim to work with organic peanut and nut farmers, pay a fair price, and encourage the continuation of responsible organic farming. if we do this, we believe the rest will fall into place.

we place the same amount of importance on infusing our work and lives with happiness, creativity, exploration, fun, love, equality, and smiling.
